Securing A Temporary Social Security Card

There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing that you’ve lost important documents. Worse, those important documents include your social security card. Thanks to the Internet, it’s easier now, than ever before, to get a new copy of your social security card.

For many, a new copy of the card isn’t necessary. They rarely use it and they know the number. However, there are times, such as when you’re hired for a new job, that you’ll need to show your social security card for documentation. If this is the case, you can order a new copy of your card.

Here’s how to go about it

To start, you’re going to need some important documentation. You’ll require your driver’s license number or your identification number if you don’t have a driver’s license. If you don’t have this, you can use a passport to prove who you are. If you’re a lawful noncitizen, you can use your birth certificate, your passport or your drivers’ license as well.

It’s important to note that all of the documents must be the original documents. Many are concerned about sending in original copies, however, the Social Security office is very good about returning the originals. They can’t accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents, nor can they use the receipt that shows that a document has been applied for. It must be the original document such as an original or certified birth certificate.

After acquiring all of the required documents to apply for a replace missing social security card, change your name, or to get a social security card, you’ll need to print out the application for a Social Security card and fill out the required information. You can then either mail everything in or you can go to your nearest Social Security Office and they will take down all of the information there.

Go Online to Get a New Copy of Your Card

You can go to their website to find the location of the nearest Social Security Office. In many areas, you can actually go online and use your online Social Security Account to see if you meet specific requirements for your new copy of your card. You can access this easily from their website.

If your card has been lost, stolen, you’ve had a name change due to marriage or divorce, or your card has been destroyed accidentally, you can replace it for free of charge. There is a limit to 3 replacement cards in a year and you can only get 10 in a lifetime. Legal name changes and other specific exceptions don’t count toward this total.

As soon as the Social Security Administration can establish all of your documentation, they will mail back your original copies and mail you your new copy of your social security card. The SS replacement card will be the exact same number as your previous card. The only difference will be that it’s a newer card and if you’ve had a name change.
